Yes indeed, usually several. Think of it as a pre-runner of using velcro for insignia.

All my JG/KD stuff has it done this way... :)

The reason for it was that stuff in India was washed by bashing it against a rock... probably not good for your insignia, so you took it off before passing it to the "dhobi wallah".

Clever :good:

My Spearhead battledress blouse arrived on Friday so I took it along with the Monty's Locker Bedfs & Herts insignia to my tailor chap (he's also going to re-sew the buttons for me as they look like they'll ping off pretty easily). In the interests of research I schlepped all the way to Luton to visit the B&H Regimental museum on Saturday and it was....RUBBISH

Corporal with a badge that seems to be half hanging off the sleeve

That's probably because its on JGs/KDs and hence will be poppered on.

Sergeant with arm-of-service stripe in the wrong place (should be in the middle)

Not sure whether you're right there... it depends what the two badges above it are for...

The axehead is 78th Div, shamrock is the 38th Bde. My understanding is that the stripe should sit below the Div patch.

Well its all to pot anyway...

You don't normally have Brigade insignia at all!

Its normally:

Regiment
Division
Arm of Service/Seniority of Brigade

So quite possibly is the proper way of having the insignia sewn on, but following the non-standard rules that the unit had.

All the pictures I have show the order as being (from top to bottom):

Division or Brigade
Arm of Service
Regimental flash (if any)

plus there is some malarkey with coloured lanyards as well....

The non-standard variations are certainly what buggers it all up though - would never happen in the German Army :D

At least the regimental lace no longer changes on the personal tastes of a new colonel.
Or does it? :?

Things get even murkier once you get outside of British units, especially outside the commonwealth. At one time I could remember all the differences the Polish forces used, but I would have to remind myself.

Just stumbled across some pics of the Irish Brigade, and they all have the Brigade symbol beneath the Divisional sign. Looking at the 'British Battle Insignias (2) 1939-45' it says:

[The divisional sign] ...was proudly worn on just about all forms of dress (including denim overalls in one example seen), along with an astonishing variety of regimental flashes which nearly all contravened the War Office regulations. No other insignia - regimental titles, arm of service strips, etc - seem to have been worn by the Battleaxe Division.

Though I seem to remember that people were meant to take the insignia off in battle so a sharp eyed German could not work out 'who' they were fighting, but very few did it?

Anyway, thought I'd share.
